Before using your Ledger device, ensure that the packaging is sealed and that the box contains all original components. Your Ledger should arrive with no pre-installed firmware or recovery phrase. If your device is already set up, do not use it. Only trust a device that lets you initialize it yourself.
Connect your Ledger hardware wallet to your computer using the provided USB cable. Once connected, the device will power on and display instructions on the screen. Follow the on-device prompts to begin the setup process.
Ledger Live is the official companion app that allows you to interact with your device. Download and install it on your desktop or mobile device. Use Ledger Live to manage accounts, install apps, and view your portfolio. After installation, open the app and select the option to initialize a new device.
As part of setup, you will create a PIN code on your Ledger device. This code protects your wallet and must be entered each time the device is connected. Choose a code that is hard to guess and easy for you to remember. Do not share your PIN with anyone.
Next, your Ledger will generate a 24-word recovery phrase. This phrase is your backup in case your device is lost, stolen, or damaged. Write it down carefully on the provided sheet and store it in a secure, offline location. Never take a photo of it or store it digitally.
After writing down the phrase, you’ll be asked to confirm the words in the correct order. This step ensures you’ve written the phrase correctly. Without this phrase, you cannot recover your crypto if the device is lost or reset.
Once your device is initialized and secured, you can access all features in Ledger Live. Install blockchain apps on your device to manage specific coins, add accounts, and begin sending or receiving transactions. Your private keys remain securely stored in the device and never leave it.
Always verify addresses on your device screen before confirming transactions. Keep your recovery phrase private and never enter it into any software or website. Update Ledger Live and your device firmware regularly to benefit from security improvements and new features.
